The Well

lyrics

I first moved to this town
because I inherited a house from my father.
It had stood for four score years,
and had a well and a willow in the garden.
But the tree had no leaves,
instead, there hung a rusty lantern.
And the well had no bucket,
instead, there sat a crystal decanter.

Everything was closing,
nobody would give me work,
but Laura told me not to worry
as she smoothed a crease from my shirt.
And we sat in the garden,
watching the sun setting,
and as the darkness grew around us,
I could feel the temperature dropping.

My father taught me never to quit,
and I believed him.
And my mother told me to follow my dreams
but I've stopped sleeping.
And the willow by the well looks so wilted,
I swear to God it's weeping.

Well, I counted up our savings
and I counted all the tins on the table,
and my legs began to shake beneath me
as I stared at the cradle.
Laura lay in labour
in the room overlooking the tree,
and as I thought about our future,
I felt a thirst come over me.

My father taught me never to quit,
and I believed him.
And my mother told me to follow my dreams
but I've stopped sleeping.
And the willow by the well looks so wilted,
I swear to God it's weeping.

Now the house is dark,
and the only light shines from outside.
It comes in through the window,
denying me a place to hide.
Shadows fill the cradle
and crawl across my skin like lice,
and as I sit alone in silence,
I remember that old advice:

My father taught me never to quit,
and I believed him.
And my mother told me to follow my dreams
but I've stopped sleeping.
And the willow by the well looks so wilted,
I swear to God it's weeping.
You can hear it whisper quietly:
"It's warm tonight, come and dip your feet in."

about

Late Arrivals Club UK

While jumping between studying poetry and philosophy at UEA, Nick Herrmann realised that he didn't have to choose between them - he could unite them in the form of songwriting, and pursue that instead. Combined with his love of alt-country, and his fascination with American folklore, the result is a very English take on americana, thick with symbolism, existentialism and stories about outlaws. ... more
